Who's Who - Behind the Scenes

Christina Grzasko - President Christina Grzasko - President and Director
A co-founder of BSS, Christina is a great organiser with extensive experience of running businesses, managing bands and staging performances. She played percussion with bands and orchestras from an early age, and has been playing samba regularly with a bateria for many years. Christina works continually behind the scenes on tasks such as accounts, policies and legal requirements for the school.
 
Malcolm Duffitt - Bateria Director, Brighton School of Samba Malcolm Duffitt - Director
Formerly a drummer, Malcolm discovered samba in early 2006. He has played regularly with several baterias ever since, and paraded with London School of Samba at Notting Hill Carnival in 2007 & 2008. A co-founder of the School, Malcolm also provides website support for the school.
 
Nadja Janssen - Madrinha Nadja Janssen - Madrinha and Director
The Madrinha is a symbolic role and is one of honour earned through dedication for and to the school. Nadja is also Director of the Brighton School of Samba, responsible for a number of tasks behind the scenes including policies & processes, managing external workshops, emails and logistics.
 
Pip Wittenoom - Director Pip Wittenoom - Director
Pip is a Director of the Brighton School of Samba, bringing her extensive experience as a freelance arts manager to the school. Asides from playing in the bateria, Pip also prepares budgets and draws up grant applications for the school, as well as laising with the other Directors to ensure the smooth running of the school.
   
Gez Hebburn - Mestre & Musical Director, Brighton School of Samba Gez Hebburn - Mestre de Bateria
Gez brings his extensive experience of samba music to the school and is responsible for creating new music which he teaches to the bateria, giving us our unique style. He consults with the Directors to ensure the best performance possible when the school is on parade.
 
Russell Fielding - Assistant Mestre Russell Fielding - Assistant Mestre
Russell is Assistant Mestre and the Lead Repenique player of the Brighton School of Samba, working closely with the Directors, Gez and Craig in leading the school through beginner courses, intermediate rehearsals and on parades.
 
Craig Radmall - Assistant Mestre Craig Radmall - Assistant Mestre
Craig is Assistant Mestre of the Brighton School of Samba, working with the Directors, Russell and Gez, both in leading parades and bateria beginner courses.
 
Marta Scott - Lead Dance Instructor Marta Scott - Lead Dance Instructor
The Brighton School of Samba is very lucky to have native Brasilian, Marta Scott, as Lead Dance Instructor. An experienced performer and teacher, Marta's passion for samba nevers wanes and brings a great energy to the School's classes and performances. Marta is responsible for choreographing all the dance moves for performances and parades, as well as leading the dance section in workshops outside the school. (see our workshop page)
 
Andrew Jameson - Workshop Leader Andrew Jameson - Workshop Leader
The Brighton School of Samba regularly visits schools, colleges and corporations throughout the UK to teach children and adults samba percussion. These sessions are led by Andrew, who also plays in the bateria. Andrew brings his extensive skills and experience as a maths and music teacher to this role, and the school receives extremely positive feedback from the participants. (see our workshop page)
 
The Committee 2012 The Committee 2012
The Brighton School of Samba has a Committee of 10 members representing all areas of the school. The committee meet regularly to discuss budgets, forthcoming events, and implementation of plans for progressing the school through an exciting year of performances and rehearsals.
