My BSS Story: Dani

Hi! My name is Dani - I've lived in the UK since 2012 and I joined the Brighton School of Samba in 2019.

Since I left Brazil, I have always missed the varied and diverse Brazilian culture, the music and the traditions of my country. When I found the Brighton School of Samba, I felt that I had found something that was missing in my life: and that was SAMBA!

The Carnival of Brazil is a four day festival that happens every year, with music events, street parties and Samba School parades. It is also called “The Greatest Shown on Earth”. When I was a child, I used to watch the Samba School parades in Rio on the TV, and I remember being impressed by the beauty of the parade with hundreds of drummers, colourful floats and amazing dancers. This is a festival that brings true happiness to people's lives.

I never imagined that one day I'd be joining a Samba School - I did not know how to play any drums! But I started attending the BSS Bateria workshops and have learned to play the 'tamborim' and I love it!!

Overall, being a member of the Brighton School of Samba is one of the best things that ever happened in my life. I felt welcomed from day one, and I have learned a lot about samba in these almost three years being part of the school.
